Hello my Farmgirl friends!!! A month ago today I had some corrective surgery on my big toe. And not only am I in this horribly heavy boot, I’ve not been able to put any weight on it at all. So I’m here to share all the things I’ve been up to in this season of life! As this picture above shows… I’ve been moving to all my favorite spots around my house where I drink my coffee and read! ALWAYS coffee in hand!
.

.
I’ve been dealing with some bone loss issues and pain in my big toe for quite some time but it never seemed like the right time to have the surgery… but finally back in the spring I decided October was the right season… our cut flower business would be over for the year, and I had a few months to clear my calendar for my small business of sewing and blogging. Also… the thought of laying on my porch bed curled up in a blanket and watching the leaves change seemed like the most soothing thing at the time!
.

So in October I had the surgery. And that began the first four weeks of hard! I can handle pain, I can handle inconvenience, I was prepared to not be able to drive for a few months, I even had emotionally prepared myself not to be able to go to my fitness classes or run.
.

I even moved the most important sewing supplies from my upstairs sewing studio to my sunny dining room downstairs where I set up a great little sewing space. I even practiced running my sewing machine pedal with my left foot! I had left no stone unturned in my preparation for this surgery.
.

All that preparation sounds great right? But here’s the thing. I am not a sitter. I don’t enjoy sitting, I don’t do very many things that require sitting, to be honest with you. I even have a special made sewing table that is the exact right height and I have always sewn standing up!
.

.
I did have things all ready to do in this “sitting season”… a large quilt that I am determined to hand quilt this winter, a few embroidery projects, good books to read.
.

.
I even had a Graphic Designer lined up to help me with some marketing branding for my sewing business. So many great “sitting” ideas that frankly I’ve struggled with every single one of them.
.

.
I have a knee scooter and right away I got really good at moving around on it. It has helped me immensely. My husband said when he took me to Walmart, he couldn’t keep up with me as he was pushing the grocery cart! (That isn’t exactly true, however! I did stop and wait for him! Smile!)
.

.
I’ve been able to (mostly) cook meals with one leg on the floor and the other on the scooter. And yes, I’ve fallen a few times. Those scooters are dangerous! My husband said “well, I don’t exactly think you are using it the way it’s intended”!
.

.
Somehow I managed to make hand pies AND cute little buntings for a surprise birthday party of a friend that loves pie! (Tip: hand pies are pretty labor intensive on one leg… I made the pie dough and fruit filling one day, and assembled and baked them the next day and YAY, total success!)
.

.
My fitness instructor at the gym sent me some workouts I could do sitting and laying… and YAY to leg lifts in a heavy boot!
.

.
Food from my family and friends has been the best and most comforting thing ever!!
.

.
I even designed and sewed (all with my left foot) a sweet little baby doll ensemble for my little 3 year old friend!
.

.
So… bottom line. Life is not that bad on one leg! My attitude is great, my friends are amazing, my daughter and my grand-girls are THE BEST, my husband has not complained one single time (well… he IS struggling to understand why I could possibly need to go to the store more than once a week! Smile!). I’m thankful, I’m pain free for the first time in years, and I’m dreaming (like for reals dreaming) about running again!!! (As I panic in a state of claustrophobia at night when the boot under the covers makes me feel like I’m stuck in mud! Smile!)
.
Happy Thanksgiving my Farmgirl friends! Bake some hand pies and tell me about which are your favorite! Maybe I’ll make a little tutorial for that pie bunting sometime soon!
.
Until our gravel roads cross again… so long.
