The Happy Harvester

“If you tickle the earth with a hoe she laughs with a harvest” ~ Douglas Jerrold

Dear Sisters,

Tis the season to strip the fields, gather in and reap what you have sewn during planting season. Or, put another way…How full is your wheelbarrow looking these days? Is it over flowing with more seasonal goodness that you know what to do with or does it look rather barren and bleak? Either way, you can decide whether you will be the happy harvester or the broken hearted farmer who’s yeild never weighs heavy enough on the happiness scale.

It's a FARMGIRL THING!

Ever since I discovered MaryJanesFarm a few years back I am much more in tune with the things that make me tick and those that tickle my fancy too! The best part about being “a farmgirl at heart “is knowing I’m not alone in my ‘ farmgirly-ness’. Whether I’m working on a project at home, out in the garden or off on a road trip, my farmgirl spirit is always with me. I can count on it every time to add an extra dose of surprise and romance to everything I do. Just the other day I went shopping for pumpkins, mums and gourds and ended up falling head over heels in love with a…
Well, you’ll just have to come in for the full story cuz…

Farmgirl Fall Flourishes

Yippee, Skippee! It’s Fall Y’all! I’m as busy as a backyard squirrel getting my ‘ house in order’ inside and out for the coming cooler months. Why all the scurrying about? Well, I only know one way to ‘ do fall ‘ and that’s at warp speed! Isn’t that how ‘ you do fall ‘ too? Come on in for a pumpkin spice latte’ and enjoy some early FALL FLOURISHES farmgirl style! This might be the only chance WE get to sit down until Thanksgiving dinner!

Rising Tide

Dear Sisters,

I hope this post finds you feeling refreshed from a fabulous farmgirl filled summer and ready to tackle the back to school season.  I’ll admit, I’m in complete denial that school has already started (or is just about too) in most areas. After all, the BEST of summer weather is yet to come! Here on the shorelines that means clear blue skies, no humidity and the anticipation of stealing away for a few more boat rides on less crowded waters. There’s no turning back now. It’s time to trim the sails and head for more structured shores. I’m cruising into this school year on the incoming tide with high hopes for smooth sailing ahead! However, my nautical chart tells me that with two teens in high school ( one still home, the other in school ) the chances for some variable weather and high seas are almost certain in Cape Cod Bay. It’s bye-bye BEACH and back to school for this HOMESCHOOL marm. Land Ahoy!

Backyard Blossoms Flower Show

~Where flowers bloom so does hope.

Lady Bird Johnson,

Dear sisters,

Welcome! You’re just in time for the first tour of the day of my Backyard Blossoms Flower Show! Every day, every hour brings something new in the garden and I’ve got a yard full of sunny faces just waiting to greet you!

I don’t remember another time in my life when I have been more ” in the moment” or aware of my ” inner sage” ( other than falling in love or when our children were born

) than the time I’ve spent in my garden this year. I know each leaf, each petal, each bloom intimately. I promise you will too by the end of this post!

Let’s walk (and talk ) among the flowers shall we?

Gone To The Beach

Nothing makes me happier than to hang up my GONE TO THE BEACH SIGN and head for the cottage!

Just the sound of the word BEACH conjures up a passel of images doesn’t it? After all, going to the beach means different things to different people depending on the kind of beach farmgirl you are. For some, nothing but an escape to a tropical paradise will do. White sand, warm, sparkling turquoise blue water, snorkeling and cocktails at sunset is the only way to go. Or, maybe you prefer an overcast day or two mixed in with your sunshine having your cake and eat it too. Me? Well, I like them all! I’ve had the good fortune to dip my toes in the sand of a slew of shorelines over the years. Lake Tahoe, Hawaii ( Oahu and Maui ); California Beaches: San Diego, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, San Jose, San Francisco, Mendocino, Point Reyes National Sea Shore, Carmel and Monterey. Oregon Beaches: Fort Bragg, Crescent City, and Lincoln City. Bar Harbor, Maine, Aruba, Truro beach, The Cape Cod National Sea Shore, Falmouth beach, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard and the Outer Banks of North Carolina just to name a few! While each of them is dreamy in their own way (especially Maui) my heart belongs to a small peninsula on the south shore of Boston.

Psst. Hey…We’re on vacation… Wanna come too?

Summer Nurturings

Dear sisters,
I hope this note finds you someplace cool, listening to the slow song of  summer.
As I was thinking about what pearls from the shorelines to share with you this week the word ‘ nurture ‘ popped up! And more than once I might add. That’s when it hit me! I’ve spent most of this summer wearing my ‘ nurturing hat ‘. I bet some of you have put in a fair amount of time in yours too! Grab a beach chair and settle in. Go on! Dig your toes into the sand and take a nice, long deep breath. Better? Good! We’ve got lot’s to catch up on!

Farmgirl Friday

Dear Sisters, I know it’s only been two weeks since our last visit, but it feels like months. Is it just me or do we ALL try to pack an entire lifetime into one summer? I guess that’s what we are supposed to do with these long, sunny days and an overabundance of energy! I’ve been minding my own business having fun in the garden, squeezing in some family beach time and somehow along the way I, um, well I got into a little farmgirl trouble.  Come on in for the full confession….

Mudpuppies & Horseshoe Crabs

Happy Summer Sisters! Can you believe it? It’s finally here! Why does the arrival of summer have such a bitter sweet taste? Maybe it’s because we wait so, so long for summer solstice (the longest day of the year) knowing that each day going forward gets shorter by a minute or two. If you’re like most Farmgirls, you’re running in twenty different directions trying to capture the best days of summer! Same here! Wanna see a Horseshoe Crab and a mudpuppy too? Join me as I ramble…
