It’s Baaaaack: The YOU Challenge!

The month of May means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

To me, it means gardening and warmth and flowers and grass and watching the workers trim the Christmas trees on the hillside and strawberries and my birthday and the return of that lonesome whipporal call in the evening.

What does it mean to you?

Remember that song we used to sing in 4th grade music class? “I was strolling through the park one day, in the merry merry month of May….”

Or what about when you were a kid and danced around the May Pole at school? Or gave your neighbor a May Day basket of flowers?

For us, in the agriculture zone I now live in, our thoughts turn to plowing and planting. Finally. The dirt is warm enough to sprout some seeds. Sure, we’ll have a few days of frost ahead, but they will be few and far between. The worst is behind us. Winter is over, a thing of the past.

The month of May also means Indigo Buntings…

indigobunting

and the wild trilliums are in bloom on the wild, cool bank beside the wild mountain brook that runs down the wild mountainside behind my wild house…

P1170644

the random wild asparagus growing in my pasture is ready to pick and roast

P1170657

look how large these stalks are. does that mean they are old plants? I don’t know. But they are humongous!

P1170658

And I roasted them as soon as I got inside. OMGoodness! Tasty and fresh and delicious! The best ever.

the lilac bush is incredible….oh the aroma! this is one of my favorite things about May. The earth has awakened from its winter slumber with delicious, glorious smells! May is the sweetest smelling month. Or maybe we simply appreciate and notice the aromas more because it has been so long since we smelled them. Fresh mown grass. Fragrant flowers. DE-VINE.

P1110237

I cut a big branch off one of our lilac bushes and put it in a vase in my kitchen. Lilacs don’t do well where I lived most of my life, so I just love them now. Oh, my kitchen smells just like May! Oh and bacon. I made my friend some bacon for breakfast. Lilacs and bacon.

and here are some more purple flowers. they bloom by the creek. I don’t know what they are…

P1170655

And here’s something you don’t see every day. Look what is in my front yard…a horse. He is a friend’s horse and needs TLC, so he’s in my yard. How cool is that? Right out my front door. Not in the pasture, nope. In the yard.

P1170634

And the BIGGIE! I know you’ve been waiting for this day! The day I challenge you to move yourself up on your priority list. The day I challenge you to put on your walking shoes every single day for the next 30 days and walk. Yes, My Friends, the “YOU Challenge!” is finally baaaaaaaack. Stand up and hoot and hollar ’cause it is MAY and we’re walking together.

Here’s how it works. (post from last year)

We had so much fun last year. We reported in every day with each other and shared photos of our walks. It was awesome. We used a facebook group to check in with each other, but you can also post here. The main thing is that you walk every day.

It’s up to you whether you walk a little or a lot. It’s up to you whether you walk outside or on a treadmill. UP TO YOU!

So lace up and join in!

Here’s my first walk:

P1170635

Guess who came with me this morning?

P1170641

Blue, the Orange Dog and Hey Jude, the Barn Cat who actually lives in my house rather than the barn…

P1170645

I called Here, Kitty, Kitty and he turned around to me and started running…mid-air.

So here we go~Let’s do this thing!

You can either head over to Facebook and join the challenge or check in here every day and leave a comment about your walk. Search for the YOU Challenge! on Facebook.

COME ON! get those feet a moving.

Until next time, Friends, savor the flavor of life!

Lots of love, The City Farmgirl, Rebekah

My walk this morning around our property was watching the iris garden in bloom,
feeding all the stray cats on my front yard’s bench, talking to my new backyard flock of chickens, walking the
edges of 9 raised beds planted full of tomatoes, bell peppers, potatoes and cucumbers,
smelling the spring in this Ozark air, watering my very own mini Christmas tree farm of
Norwegian pine trees in containers on my back patio!!
Wishes for happiness from Noel, Mo, Diana

Such a lovely post, Rebekah. Isn’t life sweet?
Here is a link to those purple flowers.

We also bought an old farm property that we are slowly making our own. At this time of year it is necessary to do two walkabouts to notice the rapid changes in the landscape. I often leave the camera indoors so I can focus on the what that I am seeing instead of being distracted by how to capture it.
Enjoy every moment and thanks for sharing.

Red trillium? I want some! I have only seen and now have in bloom, white. The flower you were wondering the name is flox. And indigo bunting! Wish we had those here. Lovely pictures, thank you.

  9. Sarah says:

I’m pretty sure you’re purple flowers are purple phlox.

  10. Nancy says:

Those purple flowers are called phlox I think.

  11. Nan Roberts says:

Oh, you danced around the maypole too! My elementary school in Eureka, Calif. had some kind of Waldorf School roots, though it was a public school. So among other things, we had a maypole. The Sixth Graders got to do it. It was a big festival evening at the school, and the band played, too. Very exciting. Some years ago, though, some people protested that it was a pagan ceremony, and demanded that it be cancelled, and it was.
